Curfew Update 06/11/2009

So I know I’ve been meaning to follow up to my last post with a bunch of news and shows, so here we go:

New tracks from All Time Low’s new album, “Nothing Personal,” can be heard here. MTV has a skit that involves the band’s members being held hostage by a group of females. In the video you’ll find the skit, with fake live and real acoustic performances of new tracks like “Weightless,” “Lost In Stereo,” and “Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t)” sliced into it.

The Friday Night Boys have released their album, Off The Deep End, available wherever fine music is sold.

Apparently the hottest trend nowadays is for artists to collaborate on tracks with female actresses. As I mentioned in my previous post, Cobra Starship teamed up with Leighton Meester for “Good Girls Go Bad,” but I forgot to include Forever The Sickest Kids’ duet with Disney Channel’s Selena Gomez. You can see a behind the scenes look at FTSK and Selena recording their rendition of “Whoa Oh!” from AbsolutePunk. As if that wasn’t enough fun, singer-songwriter Pete Yorn has paired up with the sultry Scarlet Johansson on his track “Relator” off of his new album, The Breakup.

The Blink 182 tour schedule has seen some updates, including sell-outs, added shows and venue changes. See these updates here, although the venue for the Washington, DC show has yet to be announced. Be sure to check out AboslutePunk (link on the sidebar, I’m too lazy to put a link here) for video from their epic 9-song set on Jimmy Kimmel (they were only asked to play 2 songs).

Boulder, CO’s very own 3OH!3 released their new video for “Starstrukk.” The video was directed by Sum41 drummer Steve Jocz.

Jack’s Mannequin also released a music video. Check out their latest for “Swim.”

Luis Dubuc aka The Secret Handshake has a new video, too. See the video for “All For You.

Finally don’t forget Taking Back Sunday’s video for “Sink Into Me,” now seen in its entirety.

Nevershoutnever has finally chosen a label. Christofer Drew and Co. have signed to Warner Bros. Watch an interview with Drew from the MTV Buzzworthy Blog

Listen to this B-side from The Starting Line‘s Direction, from SupJustin.

Curfew Microupdate 04/07/2009

In this flash of an update, The Downtown Fiction is playing a SOLD OUT show at Jammin’ Java this Friday, April 10. They’ll be supported by Parachute, along with The Goodnight Anthem, which should be one star studded event. In need of tickets? Maybe you could try MySpace or Craigslist or something.

Check out AbsolutePunk.net for a good stream of music news, including today’s releases. Also check out SupJustin.com for new music, releases, interviews, tours…basically anything you could ever want. I don’t know who he is, but he has some awesome job that lets him follow bands and do cool things. Of late, he’s reported on new Taking Back Sunday and The Secret Handshake, nevershoutnever’s upcoming EP, an interview with Hit The Lights, and even Hey Monday’s new video–which I admit isn’t bad, though I would’ve liked it better when I was in high school.

Meanwhile, I’m not sure what’s more exciting between Blink-182 getting back together, new music from Taking Back Sunday, or Brand New. Here’s a new one from Brand New, “Gasoline” (different than the links above, you should click those too).

Facts and Fiction

The Downtown Fiction w/Parachute & The Goodnight Anthem @ Jammin' Java 4/10The Daily Chorus has reported that Fairfax,VA’s The Downtown Fiction has been causing quite the stir as of late. Their self-titled EP debuted on iTunes’ top 30 albums of last week. And if you thought that things couldn’t get any sweeter for the local trio, TDF also debuted at #93 on the Billboard HeatSeeker chart. I admittedly have no idea what  it takes to get on the Billboard HeatSeeker chart, but I assume that its quite an acheivement. The band, comprised of Cameron Leahy on guitar/vocals, David Pavluk on bass/vocals, and Eric Jones on drums/samples, will make their next local appearance at Jammin’ Java in Fairfax with Parachute (ex-Sparky’s Flaw, Parachute VA) and The Goodnight Anthem. I got a chance to meet Pavluk last year at Jammin Java where he worked and also performed with his former band, The Midnight Appointment. I wish him and his band the best, and hopefully I’ll be able to see them when they’re in town.

In other news, I was able to catch Tim Be Told when they played at Ebenezer’s Coffee House in DC. It was a great show and fun to watch. If anyone has heard that they may be changing their name to either Luan Be Told or Jim Be Told, that’s completely untrue.

Finally, look out for new releases next Tuesday, March17. St. Patrick’s Day album drops include Where Are You Now by This Providence, I Am The Hint by The Hint, and When I Hit The Ground by Ace Enders & a Million Different People. I’ve been looking forward to This Providence’s new album since the release of The Bright Lights EP in October 2008, and I’ve been a fan of Ace Enders since The Early November‘s beginnings. Justin Goldberg of SupJustin.com had some good words for Ace’s latest effort on his Twitter account.

TBT at Ebenezy’s

Tim Be ToldI just wanted to take a second to focus the spotlight on a couple of local shows.  First, Tim Be Told will make their second appearance at Ebenezer’s Coffee House in Washington, DC this Friday March 6. The Charlottesville based five-piece last played the coffee shop’s basement venue last October. Tickets for this show will be $10 in advance and for students, $12 at the door.  Check out the band’s MySpace and preview tracks from their upcoming EP.

nevershoutneverAlso, Christofer Drew aka nevershoutnever, will be playing at Jaxx in Springfield, VA this coming Sunday night, March 8. Drew is set to perform with The Scene Aesthetic, The Honorary Title and The Bigger Lights as part of the Let’s Get Happy Tour. Tickets however, appear to be sold out after checking on the Ticketmaster website the past two days. The Joplin, MO teenager has a new EP due out this spring, though its first single “Happy” is already available on iTunes. For some free downloads check out the tour’s Purevolume page.

Curfew Update 02/19/2009

Blast of newish stuff right here right now. As mentioned in the last post, both acoustic and full band versions of Parachute VA’s new track, “She Is Love” is now available on iTunes.  Thursday’s new album came out earlier this week. Their latest effort is entitled “Common Existence.” Meanwhile, earlier this month Two Tongues released their long awaited self-titled album. Two Tongues is band founded by Max Bemis of Say Anything and Chris Conley of Saves the Day. From start to finish, this is a great album and I especially have high praise for its first track, “Crawl.”

Michael Gergory has teamed up again with Barely Political, this time starring in a video with Obama Girl for his song “Obama Girl Stimulus Song.” Check out his YouTube channel here, and check out the video below:

Curfew Update 11/11/2008

Back in the US, back on the blog. Happy Veterans Day, these are some upcoming shows in the DC/Baltimore/Richmond areas.

  • 11/17 Bill & Travs Bogus Journey Tour featuring The Academy Is… & We The Kings w/Carolina Liar and Hey Monday @ The 9:30 Club – Washington, DC
  • 11/18 Cobra Starship w/Forever The Sickest Kids, Sing It Loud, Hit The Lights @ The National – Richmond, VA
  • 11/19 Cobra Starship w/Forever The Sickest Kids, Sing It Loud, Hit The Lights @ Sonar – Baltimore, MD
  • 11/20 Hammers and Strings: An Evening With Jack’s Mannequin and The Glass Passenger, with special guests Fun & Treaty Of Paris @ The 9:30 Club – Washington, DC (SOLD OUT)

billandtravI’ve been scoping out the scene for tickets to the sold out Jack’s Mannequin show. I saw some up on craigslist as well as listings on ebay. Though expect a markup of 30%-60% or more from these outlets.

The Academy Is… is on tour supporting their latest release, Fast Times at Barrington High. I’ve been a fan of TAI since they first signed with Fueled By Ramen. On Pete Wentz’s Decaydance imprint, TAI are from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, same as Wentz and the rest of labelmates Fall Out Boy. Check out the video for TAI’s single, “About a Girl.” The band’s fun attitude can be seen in their video updates, called TAITV, and their sick Halloween costumes. Listening to their progression from their first album, Almost Here through Santi and now to Fast Times, I’m definitely looking forward to finally seeing them play live.

On a side note, while browsing for this post I was on Pete Wentz’s blog and found a photo of Pharrell Williams (The Neptunes, N.E.R.D.) on election day. Wentz says:

this is my favorite election picture so far. ph (Pharrell) sitting in line for three hours in miami. there is no vip. there is no “ill absentee vote”. he stood in line like everyone else. because this is/was bigger than us. i love this picture…

Pete Wentz can be a really weird dude, but he’s right about that. He was also right to sign TAI. Now we’ll get to see if he was right about signing TAI’s current opening act, Hey Monday (formerly Blake). They’ve got big shoes to fill as the first act to be dually signed by Decaydance and Columbia Records.
