versaemergeHello blogosphere. Just chiming in with the latest addition to the Fueled By Ramen label: VersaEmerge. Fighting out of Port St. Lucie, FL they seem like another female-fronted teenage pop-punk outfit…but are they? I noticed a few things while browsing their myspace page. In one of their videos, I saw that they showed their two vocalists with a vocal coach during a lesson. That really impressed me, showing that they’re serious about getting better and are willing to take the steps to do so (including practicing in what appeared to be a storage unit). Another video has an acoustic performance of their track “The Authors.” Frontwoman Sierra Kusterbeck officially plants herself on my musical radar with her bazooka of a voice. I guess those lessons really paid off. Check out the video for yourself–>

However, it’ll be interesting to see if VersaEmerge can distinguish themselves from labelmates Paramore and Hey Monday, in addition to bands like Flyleaf, Evanescence, and paltry Kelsey and the Chaos. They’re young, but with the Kusterbeck’s pipes and some fine instrumentation, I think they can.

UPDATE

Correction: Hey Monday is not on Fueled By Ramen as I referenced in this post. However, Paramore is still on FBR, contrary to Rob’s comment. It’s all explained in this email from Adam over at Fueled By Ramen:

Paramore is on Fueled By Ramen but the Atlantic Records team helps work with them.

Decaydance is a separate label from FBR. We have some bands in common with them and others that are only on FBR. Decaydance also has bands that are only on Decaydance.

  • 11/20 Hammers and Strings: An Evening With Jack’s Mannequin and The Glass Passenger, with special guests Fun & Treaty Of Paris @ The 9:30 Club – Washington, DC (SOLD OUT)

billandtravI’ve been scoping out the scene for tickets to the sold out Jack’s Mannequin show. I saw some up on craigslist as well as listings on ebay. Though expect a markup of 30%-60% or more from these outlets.

The Academy Is… is on tour supporting their latest release, Fast Times at Barrington High. I’ve been a fan of TAI since they first signed with Fueled By Ramen. On Pete Wentz’s Decaydance imprint, TAI are from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, same as Wentz and the rest of labelmates Fall Out Boy. Check out the video for TAI’s single, “About a Girl.” The band’s fun attitude can be seen in their video updates, called TAITV, and their sick Halloween costumes. Listening to their progression from their first album, Almost Here through Santi and now to Fast Times, I’m definitely looking forward to finally seeing them play live.

On a side note, while browsing for this post I was on Pete Wentz’s blog and found a photo of Pharrell Williams (The Neptunes, N.E.R.D.) on election day. Wentz says:

this is my favorite election picture so far. ph (Pharrell) sitting in line for three hours in miami. there is no vip. there is no “ill absentee vote”. he stood in line like everyone else. because this is/was bigger than us. i love this picture…

Pete Wentz can be a really weird dude, but he’s right about that. He was also right to sign TAI. Now we’ll get to see if he was right about signing TAI’s current opening act, Hey Monday (formerly Blake). They’ve got big shoes to fill as the first act to be dually signed by Decaydance and Columbia Records.
